Besides the "Alpenfahrt" the national and international rally-scene in the late Sixties and early Seventies was dominated by the "Rallye der 1000 Minuten", a European Championship event. It was the hottest event at this time similar to the famous "Mille Miglia" in Italy. The rally was run without special stages through five different provinces. There were only required opening and closing times at the controls which were based on very high average speeds. Those coming late received penalty minutes, furthermore there was a time limit. Those over the limit could return home immediately. Often only a very few made it to the finish, only the best could win. |

This unrelenting chase brought not only all austrian aces to the start but later also the leading teams in the world at that time of Fiat, Lancia, VW and BMW. They were all competing with real factory crews and real professional drivers.
|
Looking into the results lists of the time you can find many stars of the era as competitors. But there were also people at the start who are today seen as celebrities. The rally itself was done every year from 1964. At this first "Rallye der 1000 Minuten" on October 24 and 25, 1964, Kurt J. Sassarak was the race director, Peter Nidetzky the secretary and Walter Radler was responsible for the course. Of 64 starters only 9 then made it to the finish. In the following years famous names find themselves in the list of the leading functionaries like Gösta Zwilling, Armin Holenia, Dkfm. Christian Hübner and many others. |

|
The end of this classic was in 1973 when a problem of coordination of state officials forced the organiser RRC 13 to call off the race one day before the start. The subsequent worldwide oil crisis prevented a renewed running in the following years.
25 years later the idea came up within the club to let this "Rallye der 1000 Minuten" come to life again. However, it was clear that mode had to be changed but the drivers and the former cars can take part in this "classic event" now.
